The first Welsh language comic book in 20 years is going to be published

This will not be just Batman in Welsh

The Welsh language has many young children’s characters which have remained popular for decades but Huw felt there was no equivalent for children in a slightly older age category.

“In English there are characters like Batman, for example, but I didn’t want something to just be translated,” Huw explained. “I wanted something original and unique which is only available in Welsh.

“I also wanted to create an ongoing community, like an e-comic, for the children to feel part of this world.”

And kids can get involved, too

As well as the book itself, its website allows children to engage with the characters and continue living in the comic’s world through a number of activities.

They will have the chance to suggest how a story in the comic develops for the next publication and can get involved in educational competitions around the storylines and the characters.

It is also designed to appeal to readers who are learning Welsh as a second language through exciting stories but manageable language and the use of cartoon images to help with more advanced vocabulary.

This is how a typical comic strip will look:

Huw said: “Comics are great at allowing children to enter a complex plot which doesn’t overwhelm them.

“When we were putting it together it was important for me to consider children and adults who are learning Welsh and one of the great advantages of comics is that learners can use the pictures to learn new vocabulary.”

So, who's in it - and what are the stories?

A number of artists, cartoonists and authors from across Wales have contributed to the book and the three long stories are a mixture of adventure, mystery and humour.

The character on the front cover of the first publication, which will be launched on May 30, is ‘Gwil Garw’, a hero from prehistoric times who solves people’s problems and embarks on a thrilling journey.

Another story is set in the year 4002 on the ‘New Wales’ planet and young pilot, Iola, takes part in a space rally.

The third story takes a more mysterious turn as Nefyn and Trefor enter a secret place and explore the depths of a strange and dark city.

There are also comic strips, jokes and short stories.
