Anglesey se déclare pour l'indépendance du Pays de Galles (03 août 2019)

A community council has become the first on Anglesey to declare its support for Welsh independence.

Saturday saw up to 8,000 people attend a rally supporting the principle of Wales becoming a sovereign nation in its own right.

It was organised following a similar rally in Cardiff earlier this year, with several community councils having already thrown their weight behind the Yes Cymru campaign.

Machynlleth was the first to do so, followed by a string of local authorities mainly within Gwynedd, with the county council following suit last month.

But during a meeting on Tuesday, Llanfairpwll Community Council became the first on Anglesey and the 20th in Wales to do so following a proposal from the community and county councillor, Meirion Jones.

As well as Llanfairpwll, it is also understood that neighbouring Penmynydd Community Council has a similar proposal on the agenda for their next meeting.

The motions are largely symbolic, however, and  any constitutional change could only be agreed following an agreement between the Welsh and UK Governments – of which both ruling parties remain ideologically opposed to.
